How To Choose Skid Steer Attachments
Recently, I needed an attachment for our skid steer loader that I just couldn’t decide whether it was the right size for my exact machine. Since many attachments for Skid Steers use the Universal Quick Attach, you might assume that you can just hook any attachment to it and it has to work.
That is not the case. What I found out after some internet research is pretty much the opposite. After watching some super informative instructional videos on how to size each particular attachment, I found out that the weight of my machine and it’s hydraulic flow play a major role in chosing the right size attachments.
Naturally, when people spend the kind of money that it takes to buy a Skid Steer Loader, you can’t help but want to think that the loader your own is herculean! If you bought a 100 horsepower track skid steer then, and only then, you are right. The only problem is that 90 percent of skid steer out there are way smaller and cannot handle the larger attachments, or ones that require high flow hoses and connections. The good part is that unless you are buying a forestry mulcher, or a cold planer for removing pavement, then most other attachments do not have high flow hydraulic requirements.
If hydraulics aren’t the issue, the only other issue is the weight of the attachment. If you bought a 96 inch six way dozer blade for the small 20 horsepower skid steer then you are about to be severly dissapointed. The best way to be sure that you are buying a good fit is to check your machines specifications for lift capacity, horsepower, and hydraulic flow. Then do the same for the attachment.
Getting the right fit for the Skid Steer loader is one of the highest priorities. After all, it wouldn’t work well to buy an attachment especially on the internet only to find that it did not fit your Skid Steer properly, and now you have a several thousand pound problem that needs to shipped back. Taking the time to pick up the phone and call these online companies is probably the most important advice that can be given. You can learn a lot from people who have used the product in question and also talk about what the intended use for the attachments are.
